Vikings strong against Rebels, Bulldogs





The Viking volleyball team played a couple of away matches— against the Moose Lake Rebels and the Carlton Bulldogs—last week and came back with one win and one loss. TheVikings are 3-1 so far on the season.

On September 8, the Vikings took on the Moose Lake Rebels. Once again the team came out playing great and used the quick new plays they have been working on in practice. The Vikings beat the Rebels in game one of the match, 25-15. In game two, the Vikings started out a little slow, but did not get upset. They battled back in an exciting game to beat the Rebels, 27-25. In game three, the Vikings came out on the court pumped up from their wins in games one and two and they controlled the tempo in yet another exciting game. The Vikings won game three, 25-19, and came away with the match win.

Senior Essa Jacobsen played a very good game at the net, capitalizing on three quick one-sets. That is a fast set, just a foot above the net. Timing has to be precise for this type of play to work; Essa was right on the money.

Leading the Vikings at Moose Lake was senior Christina Nelson with nine kills and 18 digs; junior Brea Boomer had nine kills and 17 digs; senior Carly Puch once again had 18 fantastic set assists and junior Kristina Rude added 10 set assists.

On September 10, the Vikings took on a very tough Carlton Bulldog team.

TheVikings have had trouble with the Bulldogs in the past but came out fighting. The Vikes played hard, surprising the Bulldogs and sending the Bulldog coach scrambling to change her lineup.

Even though the Vikings lost the match to the Carlton Bulldogs, they played very well, serving 94%. Senior Essa Jacobsen once again played well at the net, having six solo blocks.

Coach Pam Taylor said the girls played their hearts out and never gave up. They still tried to run their quick plays and just kept fighting.

The Vikings won the second game of the match, but lost games one, three and four.

Leading the Vikings was Christina Nelson with 11 kills; Brea Boomer had 8 kills and 17 digs; and Essa Jacobsen had 7 kills. Carly Puch had 11 set assists and 17 digs and Kristina Rude had 17 digs and 12 set assists.

The team’s overall serving percentage is 90 so far this season.

Scores in the match were 25-16, 23-25, 29-27 and 25-19.
