Another busy week for the Cook County Vikings volleyball team last week as they hosted the Barnum Bombers and traveled to Silver Bay to take on the Mariners.

On September 22, the Vikings hosted the Barnum Bombers in an exciting home match. The Vikes came out on fire and seemed to stun the Bombers. Sophomore Ashley Deschampe served some stinger serves and also played strongly at the net. Senior Christina Nelson played great all around and at the net seemed to place the ball in just the right places to give Barnum a fit. Barnum stepped it up but the Vikes pulled out an exciting 25-22 win.

Once again in game two, the Vikings came out hot. The home crowd enjoyed some exciting volleys and great play by their Vikings. Essa Jacobsen played great at the net and Sammy Jacobsen has been playing very well at the libero position. Again Ashley Deschampe and Christina Nelson played aggressively at the net. The Vikes beat Barnum in game two by a 25-19 score.

In game three, the Vikings found themselves down by five points, as momentum seemed to have shifted over to Barnum. Once again there were some great volleys, but this time the Bombers were just a step ahead of the Vikings. The Bombers’ six-foot outside hitter, Katrina Newman, had many kills against the Vikes—she seemed to find all the holes. Newman’s sister, junior setter Jessica Newman, served nice set assists.

The Vikings started falling apart. They made mental errors and appeared to be an entirely different team than the one that started so fiercely. The Vikes dropped the next three games 18-25, 20-25 and 1-25 and lost an exciting match to the Barnum Bombers.

Leading the Vikings against Barnum was Christina Nelson with 12 kills and 13 digs. Brea Boomer had eight kills, 20 digs and six solo blocks. Ashley Deschampe had 10 kills and 14 digs. Essa Jacobsen had five solo blocks. Carly Puch had 15 set assists and Kristina Rude added 13 set assists.

On September 24 the Vikings traveled to Silver Bay to take on their North Shore rivals, the Silver Bay Mariners. TheVikes had to play the match without Essa Jacobsen, who has been having some knee trouble and Bekah Laky, who has been having some lower back issues.

TheVikings didn’t play their best. Theyhad to adjust to playing next to different players as some of the bench players had to play. There were some frustrating moments.

The Mariners, who have been the powerhouse team on the North Shore for many years, are struggling this year as they are rebuilding and adjusting to a new coach, so they were much weaker than usual.

Sometimes when you play a weaker team, for some reason you play at their level, which the Vikings did. Although it wasn’t Cook County’s best playing, they beat the Mariners in three straight games 25-23, 25-11 and 25-19.

Leading the Vikings at Silver Bay wad Christina Nelson with 10 kills. Ashley Deschampe had eight kills, Carly Puch had 10 set assists and Kristina Rude had 11 set assists. Digs were not available.

Next match play for the Vikings will be on September 29 when they travel to McGregor and then on October 1 the Vikes will be at home playing host to Cromwell. It is also Parents’ Night and Homecoming. Come cheer
our Vikes!
