The Viking volleyball team added two more wins to its record with a road win against the McGregor Mercs on September 29 and a big home win on October 1 against the Cromwell Cardinals, bringing their record to 8-2 in the conference and 11-4 overall.
At McGregor, the Vikings were once again without Essa Jacobsen and Bekah Laky, and adding to the list of players out, junior Kristina Rude was out due to illness. The Vikings went from a 6-2 lineup (meaning two setters in a game) to a 5-1 lineup (a lone setter). This put a lot on the shoulders of senior Carly Puch who had to be the lone setter.
Also the bench players got some action in the absence of three starting players. Senior Ashley Green played an aggressive game at the net and junior Chelsey Sorenson stepped it up in the back row.
With the adjustment of playing beside new players and a 5-1 lineup, the Vikings won the match against McGregor, but it wasn’t their best play. They beat the Mercs in three straight games, 25-13, 25-15, and 25-20.
Back home on October 1, the Vikings took on a tough Cromwell team in a Homecoming battle. The Vikings were still without Kristina Rude and Bekah Laky, but Essa Jacobsen was back into action.
TheVikings jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in game 1 of the match and the home crowd was treated to some exciting volleys as the Cardinals and the Vikings battled. The Vikings beat the Cards in a nail-biter 26-24.
Once again the Vikings jumped out to a big lead in game two, and once again the Cardinals came battling back. Essa Jacobsen played an aggressive game at the net, as did Brea Boomer and Ashley Deschampe. Christina Nelson gave the Cards fits as she was hitting the ball in the places where the Cards weren’t!
The Cardinals had some good offense of their own in senior middlehitter, Ashley Collman and senior outside hitter Tayah Johnson. Collman had several kills against the Vikes. The crowd again saw some great volleys and action as the Vikings beat Cromwell in game two, 25-15.
In game three of the match, the Vikings started out slow and fell behind the Cardinals early, but kept their composure and battled back to tie the game at 14 all.
Again there were long exciting volleys and aggressive plays but this time the Vikes came out on the losing end, dropping game three 23-25.
Thisbrought on a fourth game and the Vikings jumped out to a big lead, but Cromwell came battling back, not wanting to go away. More great volleys followed and Cromwell kept the score close. Cromwell lost its outside hitter Tayah Johnson to an ankle injury and the Vikings took advantage of her absence and beat the Cardinals 25-19 to win the match.
Leading the way for our Vikings in the Homecoming win was Christina Nelson with 15 kills. Brea Boomer had 10 kills and 29 digs, Sammy Jacobsen had 22 digs and Carly Puch had a huge 29 set assists and eight awesome ace serves. Junior Chelsey Sorenson was in the Libero position and played an outstanding game in the back row.
Congrats Vikes!
