Summer fun and fundraisers at ENP

This has been a very busy end of the summer for the Elders in Grand Portage. We spent a great day at Gale and Carbine Carlson’s cabin at McFarland Lake. We fished, toured the lake on two pontoon boats, had a great barbecue picnic and a wicked game of cribbage. This has been an annual outing and as always, we had a great time even though no one caught fish.

Joining our ENP group were the HUD housing’s summer youth mentor students—Samantha Scalise, Thomas Rankin, Jayden Aubid and Joe Semhric.

Rendezvous Days were again a lot of work, but it is our best fundraiser. Once again the Elders operated their fish/ strawberry shortcake stand, bingo in the firehall and both a 50/50 and prize raffle. These ventures take many people to run throughout the weekend. There are many hours of planning and preparation that go into this weekend. A Chi Miigwech to everyone who gave of their time and willingly cleaned berries, baked cakes, cleaned, served, cooked, sold tickets, called bingo, picked up prizes and any of the many other tasks that needed to be done. Also, A Chi Miigwech to all the local businesses who so generously donated prizes for our bingo. We so appreciate your support year after year.

The Elders wrapped up the summer with a boat ride on the Sea Hunter II on Lake Superior last Saturday night. This was wonderful! The weather was delightful and we had a beautiful sunset. Twenty-one Elders participated and we would recommend this to anyone. The boat is comfortable and fast with a helpful and courteous crew. We shared many memories and stories throughout the trip.

We would like to remind everyone that we have a terrific cookbook for sale. There are many tried and true recipes from the Elders. This makes a wonderful gift. Anyone wanting information can call the Elderly Nutrition Program at (218) 475-2655.
