Summer fades into busy September

The weather was wonderful for the annual Hawaiian Luau at North Shore Care Center last week. The residents enjoyed being on the patio for Hawaiian food and music. There was also a Hawaii Five-0 dance with the Portage band. No hula dancing, but several people tried the limbo!

The summer is going by quickly for residents at North Shore Care Center. The weather has been great for enjoying activities on the patios, picnics, and outings in the community. Everyone looks forward to Labor Day weekend for our last picnic of the year and an outing to the Playhouse.

The Cook County Fair was a highlight for many residents this year with 17 entries—12 blue ribbons and five red ribbons. The entries included oil paintings, knitted hats, scarves, a prayer shawl, woven items and cookies, as well as flowers and vegetables from the gardens. It was fun to go to the fair and see all the other entries and exhibits, too.

September outings will take us to the play Gas and Candles, lunch at the Senior Center, and a leaf tour trip— with a stop at the Dairy Queen.

The monthly birthday party will be celebrated on September 14 at 3 p.m. The September birthdays will mark major milestones for Olga Erickson, age 99, and for Irene Leng and Mable Stoltz, both turning 100 years. Cake and ice cream will be served along with music performed by Susy Lindskog.

The Lioness Club will be hosting afternoon socials the third Saturday of each month beginning September 17. There will be special desserts and piano music by Irene Thompson.

National Centenarian Day is September 22—another day for a party to honor our 100-plus-year-old residents and other centenarians in the community. There will be live jazz music performed by The Sivertones at 5:45 p.m. with cake and punch served.

There is a lot of music lined up this month at the Care Center. The North Shore Community Band will play their Big Band sounds for a dance on September 8 at 7 p.m. and the band Portage will be back for their monthly country classic dance on September 24 at 6:30 p.m. As always, families and community members are welcome to join in the fun at our music events.
