Spring arrives, fresh from the garden

It is official. Spring is finally here. The Elder Nutrition Program (ENP) with the help of Andy Schmidt was able to provide fresh lettuces and radishes for our luncheon meal on Wednesday, May 11. What a treat and welcome way to head into the summer!

We can’t wait for all the delicious veggies yet to come. Our rhubarb looks great. We should be able to pick some in the next week or two. I can taste the breads and cake.

We had a wonderful Elders’ Powwow Saturday, May 7. We enjoyed seeing returning family members, friends and spending time reconnecting and reminiscing.

Elder mothers received beautiful corsages created by Carol Hackett and provided by the Elder Advisory Board. Miigwech!

The drums, dancing, gift and delicious meal were wonderful. Congratulations to the 50/50 winner Joal Santos who won $175.

Angie Crow won the beautiful handmade butterfly quilt. This quilt was sewn and donated by Kathy Skoog. Elder Betty Hoffman donated her time to sew the quilt together.

Grand Portage Elders have been enjoying spring! The Elders' Powwow on May 7 gave an opportunity for Elders to visit with friends and family. Ellen Olson visited with Grand Portage Senior Princess Samantha Scalise.

The Elders greatly appre-ciate these thoughtful donations of material and time.  Miigwech to the powwow committee for their time-less hours of work, the tribal council for their sup-port and the community of Grand Portage for all they give to us and our community. You all make us proud to be Elders living in Grand Portage.

We would like to congratulate all our students who have successfully com-pleted another year of their schooling. To those who are graduating, we wish you every success in your future endeavors. Good job!

As we head into June we are looking forward to tribal elections on June 14, the Wisdom Steps Conference, Kid’s Day, Wellness Fair, of course graduations and the beginning of summer which means picnics, fishing, hikes, travelling the back roads and family visits. Happy Memorial Day! Please remember to visit a vet and thank them for their service
