In 2019, a group of local women began working on a plan for a special garden. Their vision as gardeners and landscapers was to create a Serenity Garden, “a peaceful space in nature for reflection and healing,” at the North Shore Health campus in Grand Marais. In 2020, the Serenity Garden Committee (SGC) was formed in response to the hopes of patients, residents, families, visitors, and staff for a meditative outdoor space to be added to the empty courtyard between the new Hospital wing and the Care Center wing. The SGC applied for and received a $60,000 grant from the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation, and there were many generous donations from the community as well. By summer, contractors were able to start work on the “hardscape” cement walkways, seating areas, and a beautiful patio and garden wall. Hundreds of volunteer hours went into the new project. Early signs of spring 2021, have prompted the SGC to work on their final list of trees, shrubs, and perennials to be planted this year. It will be an exciting time at the Serenity Garden as everything in nature begins to change and blossom. A busy season of planning, planting and growth – just in time to welcome International Earth Day on April 22 and National Arbor Day on April 30. If all goes well, the planting areas and wooden benches will be completed and installed this summer. In order to help support this large project, a “Pave the Way to Serenity Garden” campaign was initiated by the SGC. A personalized paver brick can be purchased and customized as a memorial to a loved one, a tribute for a special person, or a way to share inspirational words.
