Preparing for fall festivities at Care Center

Our great fall weather made for an enjoyable leaf tour up the Gunflint Trail last week for residents at the North Shore Care Center. We welcomed autumn and hope for more warm days ahead.

October is here with some fun themes to enjoy all month—like Oktoberfest, Country Music Month, Leif Erikson Day, Columbus Day, National Pizza Month, and of course Halloween.

There will be lots of kids coming into the Care Center during October to visit with residents, play bingo, perform a piano recital, and “Trick or Treat.” The elders will be busy filling treat bags for the kids’ Halloween party at the Cook County Community Center and also to give out at the Care Center that night.

October outings in the community will take us to the Senior Center for lunch and to the Grand Marais Playhouse for the school play Captain Louis.

The monthly birthday party will be held on Tuesday, October 8 at 3 p.m. to honor Jane Backstrom and Ophelia Bassett. Cake and ice cream will be served along with piano music by Doug Sanders.

The monthly Lioness Social will be on Saturday, October 19 at 3 p.m. with piano music by Irene Thompson and delicious desserts for everyone.

Our annual Oktoberfest celebration is the time to bake pretzels and watch The Sound of Music movie. On Friday, October 18 there will be a special brat and sauerkraut dinner followed by a polka dance at 6 p.m. with Jim and Mary Schliep.

At the end of the month classic country music will be performed by the band Portage on Saturday, October 26 at 6:30 p.m. It will be our Halloween Dance and costumes are encouraged. As always, we invite families, friends, and community members to attend any of our music events.

Additional music in October will feature Myron Bursheim on Sundays, Irene Thompson on Mondays, Al Fuller on Tuesdays, Susan Scherer on Wednesdays, and Harris Mills occasionally on Fridays.

Thanks to all our musicians and volunteers who give so much of their time during the summer months. We would like to acknowledge the North Shore Health Care Foundation for their generous contribution to the art therapy program for elders at the Care Center. Also, thank you to the 15 volunteers from Bethlehem Lutheran Church who participated in a E.L.C.A. community service day to beautify our gardens and patios.

There are volunteer opportunities for all ages at the North Shore Care Center. For more information please contact the Activity Department at (218) 387- 3518 or visit our website www.nshorehospital.com.
