The popular local band known as Portage was honored with individual trophies as the inaugural members of the Grand Marais Grand Ole Opry at the concert Saturday, January 16, 2016.

Portage has been performing classic country music for the past 12 years. They perform regularly at the American Legion in Grand Marais, during Fisherman’s Picnic, at private parties and celebrations and at the Grand Portage Lodge & Casino.

They volunteer monthly performing at the North Shore Care Center the last Saturday of most months. This dedication of time and talent won them the state award of “Stars Among Us” in 2013.

They are a talented, popular group of musicians. The band has had several members over the last few years, but three Grand Portage men have been members since the beginning. They are Arvid Dahl, lead guitar, Jim Spry, rhythm guitar and vocals, and Butch Deschampe, rhythm guitar and vocals. Deschampe is the Johnny Cash performer.

Joe Peterson has been on drums the last five years and the newest member, Jake McCormick plays base. Jake stepped in to take Tom Hoy’s place and Joe took over for Sue Majila when she moved away.

Over the years guest singers have performed with the band. They include Nancy Foster, Beth Olson and Tobie Stevens.

Everyone is invited to see Portage perform at the Legion the second Friday of each month and of course at the Care Center the last Saturday of the month. The residents enjoy seeing friends and family and dancing with them in their wheelchairs. Fun is always in the air.
