The residents at North Shore Care Center welcomed autumn with a leaf tour up the Gunflint Trail and along the shore in Croftville. The day was sunny and warm enough to enjoy Dairy Queen treats on the patio when we returned. Other outings this month will be to the Harvest Dinner at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and a “Mystery Trip” somewhere in the county.

October means it’s time for our annual Oktoberfest. Activities to celebrate German-American Heritage Month will include baking pretzels, a Bavarian Travel Show, and “Name ThatPolka Tune Night.” There will be a special German dinner and dance on Saturday, October 10 featuring polka music by Jim and Mary Schliep at 6:15 p.m.

October is National Country Music Month and the band Portage
will perform their classic county tunes on Saturday, October 24 at 6:30 p.m. Families and community members are always welcome to join our special music events.

Birthdays in October honor Jane Backstrom, Ophelia Bassett, Ruth Stimmler, and Marion Buckman. They will celebrate with their own individual birthday meals, as well as the monthly birthday party on Wednesday, October 14 at 3 p.m. The Lioness Social takes place on the third Saturday each month with delicious desserts and live music.

We welcome the After School Lounge students for “Kids & Games” every other week during the school year. We also look forward to the Preschool Costume Parades at the Care Center and Hospital before Halloween. Residents will hand out candy to kids visiting the Care Center on Halloween night from 5:00 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Many thanks to volunteers who have contributed their time during the summer months to help with exercise groups, assist with bingo, read the newspaper, perform music, or attend special events. We wish safe travel to the “Snow Birds.” For more information about volunteer opportunities, please contact the Activity Dept. at (218) 387-3518.
