On the heels of the new smartphone COVIDExposure Warning Application, which enables your Public Health Authority (collectively defined as government or public health power brokers) to notify you of possible exposure to COVID-19, comes another ingenious smartphone app: The “Truth Exposure Warning Application.”
This strictly progressive prompt enables the government or public media influence peddlers to warn you should you inadvertently hear something that is true; I imagine a well-intentioned necessity to counteract the countless untruths to which we are incessantly subjected to on a nanosecond basis. Especially in light of the fact that, for the first time ever, after some 20 years of studying the issue of trust, “the 2021 Edelman Trust Barometer reveals an epidemic of misinformation and widespread mistrust of societal institutions and leaders around the world. Adding to this is a failing trust ecosystem unable to confront the rampant infodemic, leaving the four institutions— business, government, NGOs [Non-Governmental Organizations] and media—in an environment of information bankruptcy.”
In truth — oops, my smartphone just buzzed — 58 percent believe that “most news organizations are more concerned with supporting an ideology or political position than with informing the public.”
Hmm, not to worry. Should you hear anything that conflicts with what the “news coverage told you, “Your smartphone’s “Truth Exposure Warning Application,” will kick into supersonic gear, as mine just did, and warn you.
Good thing, since research has consistently shown that our ability to detect lies from truth is no more accurate than chance or flipping a coin; conspicuously given our gullibility and overriding obsession with the sensational. (Why is it that we tend to gravitate to fabrication like flies to meadow muffins?)
Just so you know, should you choose to enable this handy-dandy—potentially life-saving—application, you will receive an exposure notification within seconds of any potential mind-warping vulnerability. Of course, you will be asked for permission for your device to collect and share random identifiers that your smartphone will record and “securely” store. Even the identifiers of other devices that are in range, along with associated metadata, such as the date, estimated duration of the exposure, and other pertinent information can be found right there at your fingertips.
If you are at risk of exposure, based on parameters set by the Public Authority for your active region, you will be provided with tailored guidance, such as recommendations for re-programming (re-indoctrination classes) or for self-quarantine, lest you take flight from pre-scripted “facts” and share what you heard with someone else. Wouldn’t want an epidemic of truth to break out; particularly given the fact that misinformation and the erosion of truth are existential threats to our sacred republic.
The governing authority wants to be sure you get “their truth” right. Absolutely don’t want someone else’s truth to seep into your consciousness and take root as untarnished truth. After all, in a world of expanding voices, “getting it right” is the foundation upon which everything else is built.
