What a great March we have been enjoying. The spring-like weather is reflected in our Elders’ upbeat moods, recommitment to exercise and garden planning.
The Elder Nutrition Program has enjoyed visits from the Grand Portage Trust Lands staff. We have had two presentations this month during our Wednesday meals. Tim Miller, Trust Lands forester, shared information on upcoming planting and harvesting as well as concerns over insects. EJ Edmond, the Trust Lands biologist, shared information about the fishery programs, harvesting and stocking. A future outing to the hatchery on Hat Point is planned for later this spring. The ENP will continue having these sessions as it keeps us up to date on the changes in our community.
The Elders had a very successful St. Patrick’s Day Stew Cook Off and Meat Bingo fundraiser. Also, held at the same time was a 50/50 raffle. This year’s Stew Cook Off winner was Rick Johnson. He is a two-time winner of this event as well as this year’s chili cook off winner. Rick is renowned in Grand Portage as an accomplished chef.
The 50/50 winner this time was Mike Keyport and the cover all bingo winner was Ralph Tesser. Ralph sold the most 50/50 tickets as well as the winning ticket. He won a complete Easter ham dinner. Way to go, Ralph!
All proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to help pay for Elders to travel to St. Paul this month to view George Morrison’s exhibit at the History Center.
Elders continue to participate in weekly Wisdom Steps, Water Aerobics, chair exercise and monthly shopping trips and visits from our Nutrition Specialist, Tess Bailey.
Happy Easter everyone!
Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the Grand Portage Elder Nutrition Program courtesy of Patty Winchell- Dahl.
