Summer officially arrived at North Shore Care Center with the annual solstice jazz concert on June 20. Thisyear the Tuxedo Jazz Quartet performed on the patio while everyone sipped cold fruity beverages. It was a hot day with some hot jazz by musicians Liz Sivertson, John Gruber, Pete Cavanaugh, and Nathan Baker. Residents, families, and staff really loved it.
July will be a busy month and residents hope for warm weather to enjoy lots of outdoor activities. There will be a 4th of July picnic with American folk music, lawn games, and an evening movie, Yankee Doodle Dandy. Other July picnics include a Corn on the Cob Day and a picnic dinner at the harbor to watch Dragon Boat practice. Residents will also go out to lunch at the Senior Center, and to the Arrowhead Center for the Arts to attend the musical Some Enchanted Evening.
A July 5th birthday party will honor Neva Marks, fondly nicknamed “Fizzle” – because she was born after the 4th. Family and residents will celebrate Neva’s 92nd year with cake, ice cream, and live music.
The flower and veggie gardens are looking great this year thanks to residents Howard Joynes and Donna Helmerson. Everyone will be carefully tending their plants to assure some hearty entries for the Cook County Fair in August.
Live music in July will feature the country classic band Portage for a dance and Happy Hour on Saturday, July 25th at 6:30 p.m. Weekly “regular” musicians will include Al Fuller, Sherrie Lindskog, Susan Scherer, Irene Thompson, Harris Mills, Nathan Baker, and Nora Bockovich. As always, families and community members are welcome to all music events.
Many thanks to the faithful volunteers who continue to commit their time and talents throughout the summer months. The middle school students from the Incredible Exchange program are doing a fabulous job, too! Thanks Kimberlee Dossey, Emma Nalezny, and Libby Zafft. The Activity Dept. programs would not be possible without you.
