Lazy days of summer at Care Center

High Tea at Naniboujou was a real treat for these 10 ladies – and an excuse to dress up! Everyone enjoyed a relaxing afternoon – and owners Tim and Nancy Ramey were on hand to give some interesting history about the lodge and restaurant. (Seated, L-R) Janet Morgan, Mable Stoltz, Dorothe Vaughn. (Standing L-R) Jean Roberts, Ina Radloff, Belinda Hudler, Irma Larsen, Jane Backstrom, Kay Rosenthal, & Margot Florell.

The residents at North Shore Care Center are taking advantage of our warm weather with plenty of time outdoors. Many activities get moved out to the patios to enjoy these lazy days of summer.

The vegetable and flower gardens are thriving this year. The ladies have been harvesting lettuce, tomatoes, and chives to make salads for dinner, and there are always fresh flowers in the dining room. We hope to have lots of entries at the county fair later this month.

Fisherman’s Picnic will be a fun weekend with so many families and friends in town. Residents will eat fish burgers on Thursday for dinner, compliments of Irma Larson’s family. We will be in the parade on Sunday, too!

August outings will take us to a play at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts, the Fisherman’s Picnic parade, and to the Cook County Fair.

The monthly birthday party will be celebrated on August 11 at 3 p.m. with piano music by Susy Lindskog. There will be cake and ice cream for residents, families, and staff to honor Lucille Hunt, Phyllis Anderson, Anne Maurin, Jack Halverson, and Sylvia Hunt.

Mable Stoltz and Laverne Hennessy stay busy preparing salad greens. Residents at the Care Center have enjoyed eating fresh salads on several occasions at supper time—thanks to productive earth boxes and good weather.

The end of August marks the annual Hawaiian Week with something fun each day—like Hawaiian style bingo, a movie, duck races, and live music with The
S!vertones
on August 24 for a Hawaiian Luau at 6 p.m., and the country band Portage
on August 28 at 6:30 p.m. for the Hawaii Five O Dance.

Other live music this month will include our “regular’ musicians—Al Fuller, Susan Scherer, Myron Bursheim, and Susy Lindskog. Families and community members are welcome to join our music events.

Many thanks to student volunteers Bethany Derscheid and Kimberlee Dossey for working well over their 50 hours for the Incredible Exchange Program. They helped with gardening, activities on the patios, bingo, exercise groups, and outings in the community.

We also want to thank the gardeners who weeded, planted, and watered the gardens this summer—especially the Abrahamson family for the beautiful flower boxes at the Care Center entrance and the many bouquets of flowers brought for the dining room tables each week. Everyone really appreciates the flowers inside and outside!

There are volunteer opportunities for all ages at North Shore Care Center. Please consider assisting residents with craft projects, Bingo, or for outings to special events. For more information about becoming a volunteer, or to check out the activity calendar, please contact the Activity Department at (218) 387-3518 or go to our website at www. nshorehospital.com.
