The spring flowers and warmer weather are certainly welcomed by the residents at North Shore Care Center. Folks have been outdoors on the patios for some activities, which lifts everyone’s spirits.

With the busy month of May behind us, we can settle into the lazy days of summer sometime soon. June is National Outdoors Month, Gardening Month, Men’s Month, and Dairy Month.

Other important dates in June include the monthly birthday party on June 13 to honor Janet Morgan, Donny Schulte, and Donna Willett. Piano music will be provided by Susan Scherer and the cake and ice cream will be served by Eleanor Waha, who has been in charge of this activity for almost 50 years!

Flag Day is on June 14 and we will have a history and trivia session. On Father’s Day a social is planned after church services. The official first day of summer will be June 20, and The Sivertones will help mark the longest day of the year with an outdoor Solstice Jazz Celebration on the patio at 4 p.m.

Additional live music lined up for this month will include music nights with Al Fuller, Dave Sieckert, Susan Scherer, and Myron Bursheim. The band Portage will also perform their classic country music for a dance on June 30 at 6:30 p.m. Portage performs the last Saturday of each month at the Care Center and the community is always welcome to join in the fun.

Summer outings this month will take us to the Harbor Light Supper Club, the Senior Center, and the Recreation Park, plus a stop at the Dairy Queen.

Many thanks to the families, staff, and volunteers who helped make Older Americans Month so successful and fun. This year’s theme Stars Among Us was appropriate for the 80 volunteers who worked so many hours at the Care Center in 2011. Several of these special shining stars were highlighted at the annual volunteer brunch for their many years of dedicated service— Lyle Gerard, Al Fuller, Joan Drury, and Mark Ditmanson for 10 years, the Lioness Club for 15 years, Walt Mianowski for 25 years, Sharron Brenner for 30 years, and Eleanor Waha for 50 years.

A special thanks to the North Shore Community Band, Doug Sanders, guest swing dancers Veronica and Bob, and to all of our other volunteer dancers and helpers for another great Senior Prom event.

Thanks also go out to the Cook County High School students who volunteered at the Care Center for their service day. They helped weed garden areas, pick up litter, clean the gazebo, and sweep sidewalks after the rain. Now we just need good weather to begin planting our annual flowers and veggies.

There are volunteer opportunities for all ages at North Shore Care Center. Please consider giving some time this summer to assist with a garden project, an outing, Thursday bingo games, or a dance.
