The warmer weather is definitely welcomed by residents at the North Shore Care Center. Many elders have already enjoyed time on the patios and everyone looks forward to the official first day of summer.
June is National Gardening Month, Men’s Month, and Dairy Month, but also includes festivities for Flag Day, Father’s Day, and summer solstice–the longest day of the year.
Many activities are planned to get outdoors whenever possible, beginning with planting flowers and vegetables, picnics on the patios, and more outings in the community.
The Care Center is pleased to announce a special 50th Anniversary Employee Picnic planned for all past and current employees who have worked at the North Shore Hospital and Care Center. The picnic will be held rain or shine on Wednesday, June 17 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the ambulance garage area. We invite all employees to enjoy lunch and have fun reminiscing and celebrating 50 years of service.
The monthly birthday will take place on Wednesday, June 10 to honor Donny Schulte, Donna Willett, and Loretta Rosen. Cake and ice cream will be served at 3 p.m. along with piano classics by Doug Sanders.
There is plenty of good music lined up for June that feature guitar and piano music by local musicians. There will be weekly performances by Myron Bursheim, Al Fuller, Stacy Hawkins, Kate Kelnberger, and Susan Scherer.
The classic country band Portage will perform for a dance at the Care Center the last Saturday of the month on June 27 at 6:30 p.m. The Flute Reed Ramblers family band will also present old time gospel music for a concert on Tuesday, June 30 at 3 p.m. As always the families, friends, and community folks are welcome to join in the fun at our music events.
Many thanks to students from School District 166 who helped clean up the patios on Service Day in May. We look forward to working with student volunteers from the Incredible Exchange Program in June.
The residents and staff want to acknowledge volunteers Marian Johnson and her dog, Anderson for diligently filling bird feeders every week–even during the winter months. Also, we want to let Jan Parish know how much we appreciate the weeding that has been done in the garden along County Road 7. It looks great! The Abrahamsons will soon be filling the flower boxes at the entrance to the Care Center, too! We are so grateful for our wonderful outdoor volunteers!
There are volunteer opportunities for all ages at the North Shore Care Center. For more information about volunteering or the activities going on in June, please contact the Activity Department at 218.387.3518 or visit the website: www.nshorehospital.com.
Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the North Shore Care Center courtesy of Kay Rosenthal.
