Summer is finally here, which means more time outdoors for the residents at North Shore Care Center. The elders have been spending time on the patios whenever possible for gardening, games, making s’mores, and a recent concert by the Flute Reed Ramblers.
July 2 marked the halfway point of the year. July is also National Picnic Month, Family Reunion Month, and a Blue Moon Month—two moons! Everyone looks forward to another picnic on the 4th of July and more visits from families and friends. There are several more picnics planned this summer.
We hope for good weather to enjoy some fun outings this month. July trips on the Arrowhead Transit bus will take us to the Senior Center for lunch, the Johnson Heritage Post for a fiber art show, the Arrowhead Center for the Arts for a play, and bingo at the American Legion bingo tent.
The monthly birthday party will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 8 to honor Harry Lamson, Cora Stevens, and Whitey Dockan. Cake and ice cream will be served at 3 p.m. along with piano classics by Doug Sanders.
There will be a concert with Rod Dockan and Carah Thomas on Saturday, July 18 at 6 p.m.
The classic country band Portage will be back to perform for a dance the last Saturday of July on the 25th at 6:30 p.m. As always, families, friends, and community folks are welcome to join in the fun at our music events.
Additional musicians performing this month include Myron Bursheim, Stacy Hawkins, Kate Kelnberger, Al Fuller, Susan Scherer, plus Joyce K. and Friends from the West End.
The residents are excited about making posters and decorations for the Fisherman’s Picnic parade coming up on August 2. Watch for us on the Arrowhead Transit bus along with Care Center staff as we continue to celebrate our 50th anniversary year!
Many thanks to our dedicated volunteers during these busy summer months. We could not offer the variety of activities and programs without your help.

Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the North Shore Care Center courtesy of Kay Rosenthal.
