Summer is finally here, which means more time outdoors for the residents at North Shore Care Center. The elders have been spending time on the patios whenever possible for history and trivia sessions, games, making S’mores, and tending the gardens.
July 2nd marked the halfway point of the year—Day 183 of 2014—hard to believe! July is also National Picnic Month and Family Reunion Month, which means more families visiting for the rest of the summer. Everyone looks forward to another picnic on the 4th of July with families and friends.
We hope for good weather for outings in the community all month. July trips on the Arrowhead Transit bus will take us to the Senior Center for lunch, the YMCA for a tour, the Arrowhead Center for the Arts (ACA) for a play, and to Harbor Park for the Dragon Boat practice.
The monthly birthday party will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 9 to honor Neva Marks, Joyce Kehoe, Cora Stevens, and Whitey Dockan. Cake and ice cream will be served at 3 p.m. along with piano classics by Doug Sanders.
Additional musicians performing this month will be Myron Bursheim, Kate Kelnberger, Al Fuller, Susan Scherer, and a new group to the Care Center, the Flute Reed Ramblers.
The elders welcome student volunteer Chloe Blackburn, from the Incredible Exchange Program, who started working with the activity department in June. Some kids from the Youth Mentorship Program in Grand Portage will visit the Care Center to play bingo with elders and tour the North Shore Hospital on July 14.
Many thanks to Dale Jackson and Jeff from Solbakken Resort for the donation of a day of fishing on Caribou Lake with four lucky men—who caught fish and had a great time doing it! We appreciate their generosity and time during this busy season.
There are volunteer opportunities for all ages at the North Shore Care Center. For more information about the volunteer program or the activities going on, please contact the Activity Department at 218- 387-3518 or visit the website: www.nshorehospital.com.
