If I could

I would reconcile all the wrongs
I would settle the unsettled
I would quiet the disquieted
I would bring harmony to all that is
discordant
and arrest the anxious moments
If I could, I would.
If I could
I would disarm disappointment
I would discharge disillusionment
I would make certain the uncertain
I would encourage the discouraged
and enliven the spirit of the dispirited If I could, I would.
If I could
I would defend the helpless
I would defeat the defiant
I would stifle the strident
I would dethrone the proud, the haughty
and bridle the brash and embittered
If I could, I would.
If I could
I would soften the hard places
I would displace tears birthed of grief and regret
I would assuage pain
I would rebuke torment
and fully frighten fear
If I could, I would.
If I could
I would swell the presence of angels
I would shepherd the lost
I would make the crooked ways straight
I would dispel darkness
and scatter the shadows
If I could, I would.
If I could
I would paint the skies eternally blue
the mornings kissed by heaven’s dew
I would celebrate goodness
I would embrace the humble
I would delight in heartfelt tenderness
I would savor sweetness
I would rejoice in truth
I would seek refuge in God’s justice
and find strength in sanctity
If I could, I would.
