It was a busy month of holiday fun for the Grand Portage Elders program. Freezing but having fun at the Bentleyville holiday light show were Elder program participants and their young friends. The group also “shopped til they dropped.”

The Grand Portage Elders have had a wonderful holiday season. We started it off with an overnight shopping trip to Duluth with a visit to the Bentleyville light display. There were 20 of us who participated with help from four teens. The kids pushed wheelchairs, carried packages and served us royally. We “shopped till we dropped” but it was worth it, as most of our shopping was done.

This annual trip was paid for with the profit from our Chili Cook Off & Meat Bingo fundraiser in November. Again a Chi Miigwech to everyone who participated and supported us, making a trip like this possible.

Our next venture was the annual holiday bazaar at the Grand Portage Lodge. The Elders sold some crafts but the big money maker was the homemade soups and Christmas cookies. We will think about only selling food next year, as this seems to go over well.

On December 18, the Elders were treated to a wonderful and festive Christmas party at the Grand Portage Lodge. There was delicious food, great door prizes and enjoyable music provided by the band Portage. The big door prize winners of the night were Gale Carlson who won the Shark floor sweeper; Roxy Sherer who won the $100 gift certificate to IGA; and Ernie Deschampe who won the big screen TV. Congratulations to all our winners!

January will be a little quieter. Elders rang in the New Year at the Community Center and once again enjoyed the great music provided by Portage. Rides were available for those Elders needing them.

After the holiday vacation the “Reading with Kids” program will resume on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Remember to get your Wisdom Steps information and health cards to Carol Hackett. We are starting a new cycle that will run from January 1 to December 31. This information is for the conference this spring. Anyone with questions should call the ENP and talk to Carol. The ENP staff wishes everyone a very Happy and Healthy New Year!
