The Grand Portage Elders enjoyed February celebrating the month of love and “Wear Red for Woman’s Heart Health.” They had a wonderful hearthealthy special meal on Valentine’s Day. We had candy hearts, chocolates, Valentine cards and a fun bingo at the ENP. Fifteen Elders came and played bingo games throughout the afternoon. They enjoyed punch and cookies and time spent with good friends and neighbors.
Several Elders came out on the night of February 15 to enjoy a chili dinner and mini pow-wow at the Grand Portage Community Center. This was the second time this event has been held this winter. There are two more planned in March and April. This is a wonderful opportunity for the community to celebrate our culture and encourage the young people with their drumming and dancing. The next one will be held the evening of Wednesday, March 14. As always rides are provided for those Elders needing transportation.
At press time we were excited about hosting Nutritionist Bonnie Brost on March 1 during lunch. She was scheduled to talk about sugar and how it affects our cholesterol and blood sugar. This kicks off our celebration of National Nutrition Month. Throughout the month we will be taking apart the new “My Plate” nutrition guidelines. We will be learning how to incorporate more fruits, vegetables and fiber into our diets in simple, cost-effective steps. Eating healthy is a simple way to stay fit, strong and active, enabling us to live independent lives and remain at home.
Once again the Elders will be holding the annual St. Patrick’s Day stew cook-off and meat bingo fundraiser. This year it will be on Thursday, March 15 at the Grand Portage Lodge. Please watch for posters and times. We need stew, meat and prize donations. Also volunteers are wanted and needed. This is one of three major fundraisers the Elders hold throughout the year. All profits are used for Elder activities such as funeral and hospital flowers, donations to other organizations, and trips.
Mark your calendars and come out and enjoy a fun family evening.
