The ENP staff wish everyone a Happy New Year! Hope 2018 is off to a good start. We continue to stay busy with our weekly activities of cribbage, Water Aerobics, Wisdom Steps and our “Reading with Kids” program.
The reading program is a volunteer activity where elders twice a week listen to the students from Oshki Ogimaag practice their reading. We enjoy this activity just as much as the kids. Friendships are made, skills greatly improve, and fun is had by all. Anyone with an hour or so to spare can volunteer for this program Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:45 a.m. If interested, please call Carol or Patty at 475-2655 or 2002.
Carol Hackett has turned in the participants with the Wisdom Steps program’s health information and steps for 2017. There will be 15 Elders attending the Wisdom Steps conference at Black Bear in June. Anyone interested in participating can do so by contacting Carol and signing up. Participants must keep track of their walking and or exercising, health screenings, attend one health fair and when possible a Medicine Talk. Completion of the activities allows the participant to attend the yearly conference.
We welcome back Polly James from her surgery. She still needs to do light duty so she will help out in the office until she is released to be back cooking in the kitchen. We continue to enjoy the delicious meals prepared by Emma Carlson and Katie Sehloff. We are grateful for the dedicated and experienced staff at the ENP.
Upcoming activities to look forward to are the constitutional convention and training, “Nutrition with Tess,” Valentine’s Day bingo, a visit with Marjori Bottila from the Senior Linkage Line, and our tax preparers returning to help us with our taxes. Please watch the flyers for times and dates.
Stay warm, eat healthy, stay hydrated and break up the shoveling by spreading it out instead of doing it all at once.
Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the Grand Portage Elder Nutrition Program courtesy of Patty Winchell- Dahl.
