Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and the New Year is still full of promise. The Elders of Grand Portage are off to a steady pace as the New Year begins.
We are back to our weekly Water Aerobics, Wisdom Steps walking/ health maintenance program and our weekly volunteer Reading with Kids sessions. We have finished our reading with the kindergarten and first-graders and now are listening to the fifth-and sixth-graders read. So nice to see the advances these students have made through the years. It is a pleasure to listen to these kids read!
We are adding some afternoon activities during the week. Watch the calendar for afternoon board games and dominos. These have been popular in the past and as we are already out in the cold we might as well enjoy each other’s company for a few more hours. Rides and snack will be provided.
All Wisdom Step participants need to get their steps and health maintenance information to Carol Hackett to be able to attend this year’s conference at Hinckley in June. Should you have questions please contact Carol, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at 475- 2655. Please do this soon as there is a deadline for conference registration.
The director will be working with both the Oshki Ogimaag charter school and Grand Portage museum for winter gatherings. We will be facilitating sharing sessions with the students about growing up in Grand Portage and sharing pictures with memories at the museum. T.he museum director, Mary Ann Gagnon has invited the Elders to visit, share pictures and view the Wojtysiak donation. This will be planned for a Sunday in February after the Super Bowl. Desserts and transportation will be provided. Watch for flyers.
Stay warm and enjoy Martin Luther King Day and the John Beargrease Sled Dog Race.
Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the Grand Portage Elder Nutrition Program courtesy of Patty Winchell-Dahl.
