Grand Portage Elders finish walking competition

The Grand Portage Elders have been very busy with their walking competition, but they were still able to hop on the Grand Portage bus for a tour of the new cabins at Hollow Rock Resort. They enjoyed seeing the cabins and of course the beautiful scenery—the Hollow Rock in Lake Superior— that gives the resort its name.

The Grand Portage Elders had their first of the season “Rez Ride.” We had a selfguided tour of the new cabins at Hollow Rock Resort. They are lovely and it was fun walking the beach and looking at the rock. We worked up an appetite after all that climbing around so we were off to the Grand Portage Lodge for pie and coffee.

The Elders have completed their walking competition. All the teams were very evenly matched, and combined they walked a total of 2,947.65 miles. We walked as many miles as if we visited all the participating reservation members of Wisdom Steps and almost made it home to Grand Portage. Quite a feat in just two months. Way to go, Elders.

All of these miles will now be entered into a statewide Wisdom Steps competition. Winners will be announced at this year’s conference in June.

We will be celebrating “Older American Month” this May. We will kick off the celebration with the annual “Honor our Elders Pow-Wow” Saturday, May 7 at the Grand Portage Community Center. The celebration will continue throughout the month with special presentations on nutrition, exercise, health, and mental health and opportunities to volunteer. These special events will be posted throughout the community, so watch for the flyers.

The ENP provides a luncheon meal to community members 50 years and older, Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The suggested donation for the meal is from $1.50 to $3.50 depending on your age. Please remember to sign up by 9:00 a.m. for that day’s meal. You are always welcome to sign up in advance by the week or month. All meals are cooked fresh each day and signing up helps the cooks to prepare enough food for everyone. This also helps reduce waste and keeps our food costs down. Should you not sign up in advance and there is not enough entrée you will be offered a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to go with all the sides. Miigwech for honoring this request.

The ENP has many opportunities for volunteering. We continue to listen to the grade school children read twice a week and will soon need help in the greenhouse and gardens. Anyone interested, please contact Patty at 475-2655 or 2002.
