The Grand Portage Elders have had a busy October. They had their fire extinguishers checked while receiving a lesson on the proper operation and maintenance of their extinguishers. On October 20, Marjori Bottila, the specialist from ARDC, was here to assist Elders with their enrollment in Medicare and Medicare Part D.

Also present was a representative from Navigator Financial who was enrolling eligible Elders in U-Care. We had a light soup supper that night with a presentation by Marjori on long-term care, changes, and costs and plans. All eligible Elders need to review their Medicare Part D plans and reestablish their choice for a plan for 2012. This year’s time frame to decide is early and runs from October 15 through December 7. I encourage all Elders to review their plans and medicines and pick the plan that works the best for them.

The ENP will be offering the four-hour driver refresher course in conjunction with the eight-hour beginner course during November. All veterans 55 years and older and their family members will be able to receive this training for free in November to celebrate Veterans Day. Miigwech to all our veterans for their service.

Also in November, the Elders will be holding their 6th Annual Chili Cook Off and Meat Bingo fundraiser. This is one of our most successful events with the winner receiving a chili pot trophy, a year of bragging rights and their name on the winner’s plaque at the ENP. The cook-off will be Thursday, November 17 at the Bingo Hall at Grand Portage Lodge & Casino. Dinner at 5 p.m., bingo starts at 6 p.m. Judging of the chili is throughout the evening. Anyone can enter!

The ENP and the Elders would like to give the RTC a Chi Miigwech for the wonderful new Ford transport van. We use this for our Meals On Wheels program and to transport Elders to the store, post office, or errands or wherever they need to go. It is very comfortable and gets great gas mileage. Again, thank you!
