The Grand Portage Elders have successfully made it through another Rendezvous Days. Many volunteers worked the fish stand, raffle ticket table and bingo over the very busy weekend. A Chi Miigwech to all the volunteers for their time, energy and stamina. They were able to raise around $5,000. This money will go a long way towards paying for parties, trips, flowers and postage.
We have been enjoying the produce from our raised gardens and greenhouse. Tomatoes are abundant as well as onions, spinach, zucchini and fresh herbs. We wish to thank Dick Hoagland for his large donation of sweet corn and Pete Ongstad for his delicious fresh peaches. We all are enjoying these wonderful fresh foods.
Several Elders have enjoyed some special outings lately. We had five Elders attend the rededication of Father Baraga’s cross at Cross River.
Five women were able to travel to Thunder Bay to visit the Roy Thomas exhibit at the Thunder Bay Gallery. We took the opportunity to stop and shop at his wife Louise’s gallery and gift shop. We were delighted and amazed at all the wonderful and different works of art she had. We had a nice visit with her and are looking forward to her coming for lunch with us at the ENP sometime this fall. As with most of our outings we ate, enjoying a scrumptious meal at the Neebing Roadhouse.
As we move into fall the Elders will once again volunteer for our Reading with Kids program with the charter school and complete harvesting our gardens and greenhouse. We should see some wonderful canned foods and maybe some delicious salsa. There are plans being made for our annual Fall color tour with lunch. We look forward to this every year.
