The Grand Portage Elder Nutrition Program (ENP) has enjoyed hosting weekly “Chat & Visit” with the Elders and all students from Oshki Ogimaag Charter School. The children have been attentive and enjoy asking interesting questions about what it was like to grow up in Grand Portage when the Elders were their age.
The boys seemed to be very interested in the cars and all the children were amazed that there were no cell phones or Internet. Kindergarten and first-grade students spent their time visiting with the Elders at the Grand Portage Museum.
MaryAnn Gagnon, the museum director showed the students around explaining the different pieces on display and gave each child a colorful cap with the school embossed on it for them to take home.
We enjoyed a delightful afternoon of picture sharing and reminiscing on Sunday, March 6. About 10 Elders were able to attend. We laughed and needed to use the magnifying glasses but had a wonderful time.
Miigwech to MaryAnn Gagnon and her staff Tarin Logan for hosting this get together.
The Elders held an Elder Advisory Board meeting in March. Upcoming activities planned are a meat bingo fundraiser with the youth in April, a 50/50 raffle sale during Elder’s Powwow on May 7, Wisdom Steps conference in June, hosting a candidate forum in April and looking into a trip. Please watch for flyers for all of these activities.
The ENP staff would like to wish everyone a blessed and Happy Easter and an early spring planting season. We already have our greenhouse tilled!
Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the Grand Portage Elder Nutrition Program courtesy of Patty Winchell-Dahl.
