February is the month of hearts and love and the Grand Portage Elder Nutrition Program participants have been celebrating. The staff all wore red on February 7 to support “Wear Red Day” for women’s heart health.
Throughout the month, information cards have been on tables and sent out with lunch deliveries. These cards have provided useful information about stroke prevention and signs, heart attack signs and risk factors, seven simple rules for a healthier life and easy ideas for physical activity.
We celebrated Valentine’s Day with cards, candy and a fun bingo. Several Elders enjoyed themselves with Vera Amyotte being this year’s luckiest player. Vera won several games and needed help getting her winnings home.
Tess Bailey led a discussion about why we eat the foods we eat. She offered suggestions about portion size, variety and how environment affects our food choices.
In March we will facilitate a discussion with tips on how to prevent falling. Those participating in Elders needing Yak Traks will receive them, helping to ensure their safety while out walking or maneuvering from their home to the car.
We have appreciated the Health Clinic nurses coming Wednesdays for Wisdom Steps and taking our blood pressure and blood sugars. Miigwech!
The Elders will be holding their annual St. Patrick’s stew cook off and meat bingo fundraiser on the 13th. Watch for fliers and hopefully our vacationing Wisdom Steps Aide, Carol Hackett will make her way home from sunny Florida by then!
