The residents at North Shore Care Center welcomed autumn with a leaf tour up the Gunflint Trail and along the shore in Croftville. The day was sunny and warm enough to enjoy Dairy Queen treats on the patio when we returned. Everyone is in good spirits with our beautiful fall, and we hope for more good days to get outdoors to clean up the gardens and patios.
October is upon us with lots of fun themes to enjoy all month – like Oktoberfest, Country Music Month, Columbus Day, and of course Halloween.
Some activities to celebrate German- American Heritage Month will include baking pretzels, the movie Heidi, and “Name That Polka Tune.” Our annual Oktoberfest will be Saturday, October 22 with a special meal at noon and a polka dance that night at 6 p.m. featuring Jim and Mary Schliep on their accordions.
The classic country music band Portage will perform again this month on Saturday, October 29 at 6:30 p.m. It will be our Halloween Dance and we invite families, friends, and community members to join in the fun. Costumes are encouraged!
There will be additional music by musicians Myron Bursheim, Al Fuller, and Harris Mills during October, too.
October outings will take us shopping downtown and for dessert at the Blue Water Café, lunch at the Senior Center, and a Mystery Trip somewhere!
Birthdays in October honor Jane Backstrom, Ophelia Bassett, and Ruth Stimmler. Individual birthdays with family will be celebrated, as well as the monthly party on Wednesday, October 12.. Cake and ice cream will be served at 3 p.m. along with music performed by Al Fuller.
The Lioness Club will host their monthly social for residents on Saturday, October 15 at 3 p.m. with special desserts and piano music by Irene Thompson.
We welcome back students in the After School Lounge program at ISD #166. The kids visit the Care Center twice a month during the school year to play games and help with community service projects.
We also look forward to filling treat bags for the preschool costume parades at the hospital and care center and for the community center for Halloween. Don’t forget—the residents will give out candy to trick-or-treaters on Halloween night, October 31 from 5-7 p.m.
Many thanks to our volunteers who have contributed so much time during the summer months. We wish safe travel to the “Snow Birds.” Thanks to the North Shore Hospital Auxiliary for the continued financial support of the beauty shop and other needs at the Care Center. We appreciate your generosity.
