Fall fun at the Care Center

The summer is going by quickly for residents at the North Shore Care Center. A lot of time has been spent outdoors for activities on the patios, picnics, and outings in the community. We lucked out with some great weather, and hope to enjoy more nice days before the fall season arrives.

September is back to school month, the autumnal equinox, National Apple and Harvest Month, and the Labor Day holiday. We will have our sixth picnic of the summer plus outings for shopping downtown, lunch at the Senior Center, and a leaf tour up the Gunflint Trail. The first day of fall officially begins September 23, which means fall craft projects and baking will soon follow.

A monthly birthday party will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 9 to honor Bernice LeGarde, Helene Smith, and Sweeney Croft. Cake and ice cream will be served at 3 p.m. along with piano music by Doug Sanders.

September 22 is Centenarian Day – a day to recognize and honor individuals who are 100 years or older. Congratulations to our oldest resident, Phyllis Noyes, age 100.

The Grand Marais Garden Club was quick to respond to transplant perennial plants at the Care Center last week just in time before the construction project begins. The crew of eight got the job done in two hours. Some of the crew are pictured here: Helen Muth, Cathy Hawkinson and Mike Carlson.

The Grand Marais Lions Club will once again be hosting their monthly socials on the third Saturday of the month beginning September 19. There will be special desserts for everyone at 3 p.m. plus piano music and singing with Irene Thompson.

There will be plenty of live music during September with weekly performances by Myron Bursheim on Sunday afternoons, Irene Thompson on Monday afternoons, Al Fuller on Tuesday nights, and Susan Scherer on Wednesday nights.

The classic country band Portage will be back the last Saturday of the month for a dance on September 26 at 6:30 p.m. The Flute Reed Ramblers family ensemble will perform old time gospel and country music with banjo, guitar, and fiddle on Tuesday, September 29 at 3 p.m. As always, families, friends, and community folks are welcome to attend our music events and join in the fun.

The zucchini was grown by Diane Nowers, a volunteer at the Care Center. Right: Marie Jacobson won a pineapple plus $1 playing Hawaiian Bingo last week.

Some big changes will be happening at the North Shore Hospital and Care Center when the construction project begins next week. We want families and volunteers to know that parking will be available by the ambulance garage lot with the main entrance marked.

There will be another change taking place with the Activity Department as Kay Rosenthal retires and a new director takes over on September 1. All the best to both of you!

The residents and Activity staff wish to thank the dedicated volunteers who gave so much of their time during our full summer of activities. You are the best!

Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the North Shore Care Center courtesy of Kay Rosenthal. Thanks Kay— you’ll be missed!
