The Grand Portage Elders have enjoyed this fall by celebrating Grandparent’s Day with a barbecue and picnic at High Falls State Park. Many grandchildren and grandparents enjoyed a beautiful day with great food, weather, hiking, games and drumming provided by the Stonebridge Singers.

Carol Hackett took the opportunity to take a picture of all the grandparents with their families. These will be added to our scrapbooks. We also had a wonderful day travelling the back roads looking at the fall colors. There were 15 Elders on this ride and they enjoyed lunch at Lutsen Resort and an exciting ride on the gondola. The colors were waning but still beautiful. Several Elders can cross this off their to-do list.

We honored Active Aging Week with a presentation on the nutritional value of apples provided by Tess Bailey, the nutrition specialist from the Grand Portage Clinic and a discussion with great information about how to avoid falling from Treg Axtell, physical therapist from Sawtooth Mountain Clinic.

The Grand Portage Community Center Halloween Carnival included some amazingly decorated cakes, thanks to Grand Portage Elders. Here, Jon Sage, Polly James and Bob Hertzberg decorate some of the cakes.

Upcoming events in October have included our annual fire extinguisher checks with training on how to operate them, hosting the Wisdom Steps Board for their quarterly meeting, cake baking and decorating for the Halloween Carnival Cake Walk which the Elders operate and an evening spent learning about the new changes with Medicare. The session on Medicare included a light dinner, Medicare enrollment and Part D enrollment.

As we move into November, the Elders will be holding their annual Chili Cook Off & Meat Bingo on November 15 at the Lodge. Anyone can enter a chili and all can enjoy bingo with prizes of meat and for the last game, a complete turkey dinner. Included with this fundraiser is a 50/50 raffle and prize table. All proceeds will go towards the Elders’ annual Christmas shopping overnight trip to Duluth.

On November 8 the ENP will host an AARP driver refresher four-hour class. This is done in November and the American Legion pays for the class for all vets and their family members.
