Above: Grand Portage Elders are raffling a beautiful quilt during Rendezvous Days. Carol Conrad and Patty Winchell-Dahl hold the gorgeous completed quilt. Left: Grand Portage Elders and some young friends had a great day picking strawberries. Ron Ranta and Lena Santos picked and supervised the work.
The Elders have begun preparations for Rendezvous Days. Miigwech to Bob and Eddie Hertzberg for getting all the fresh herring cut, frozen, bagged and ready for fish nuggets. Duane Spry with his son Chad were able to net and process the 165 pounds needed for the Elders’ stand. Miigwech!
Betty Hoffman, Ellen Olson, Bernice LeGarde, Carol Conrad, Jay Clearwater and Carol Hackett sewed a beautiful queen-sized quilt that will be the first place prize for the Elders’ raffle this year. Ellen donated the top that is made of very cherry material squares. The quilt is on display at the Elder Nutrition Program at the Grand Portage Community Center.
The other prizes this year are a DVD player for second place and a $100 Holiday gas card for third place. Tickets are available at the ENP, the store or by contacting Carol Hackett.
Once again we will be looking for Elders to volunteer. There are many opportunities such as cleaning berries, baking cakes, or working the fish booth, bingo or raffle table to name a few. Please contact Carol at the ENP to offer your services.
As the weather improved the Elders were able to go strawberry picking in Thunder Bay with help from Mentees Kaylee Pervais, Benn Rankin and Lohnen Dahmen. Thank you to Bill Hackett for driving. Everyone who picked berries was treated to a picnic lunch at Chippewa Park, a visit to the new Target store in Thunder Bay and a stop at the cheese farm. What a fun and full packed day. We can’t wait to taste the jam!
We will continue with our regular monthly program activities throughout August and September. Please consider joining us for water aerobics, chair exercise, cribbage, wisdom steps, meals and shopping trips to Grand Marais and Thunder Bay.
Upcoming activities will be the Rendezvous volunteers’ barbecue picnic and potluck; September’s Grandparents’ Day picnic and barbecue at High Falls and Active Aging Week activities. Watch for flyers.
Also, it is time to hold Elder Advisory Board elections. The current board has been in office for several years and it is now time for an election. A nominating committee will be asked to contact potential candidates and the election will be held in late September. Anyone interested in serving please contact Patty Winchell-Dahl or Marie Spry for more information at (218) 475-2655.
