The Elders had a wonderful and profitable Rendezvous Days. The weekend started off with the group being the first to view the Mist of Avalon moored in the Grand Portage Bay. We were thrilled to see the Grand Portage flag flying high from the tallest mast.
We had 11 Elders take advantage of this memorable, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Even our eldest band member, Doris Blank was able to take the tour.
Elders worked very hard and put in long hours volunteering at the newly expanded fish booth, the raffle table and bingo hall. When all was said and done they raised about $6,000 before expenses. This money will be used for the annual Christmas party, local trips, birthday cards and postage, get well cards and flowers for all occasions. A Chi Miigwech to all the volunteers, the generous businesses who donated the many and lovely prizes and everyone who supported us.
Kathy Labrador from Thunder Bay won the 50/50 raffle. The quilt was won by Roger “Bouda” Smith Sr. from Fond du Lac. The framed Steven Standing Cloud picture was won by Patty Rogers, a Grand Portage enrollee from Alaska who generously gifted it back to the Elders to be raffled off at another time. Pam Hertzberg, Bob and Eddie’s daughter won the Holiday gift card. Congratulations!
Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the Grand Portage Elder Nutrition Program courtesy of Patty Winchell-Dahl.
