The Elders enjoyed November celebrating Veterans Day and Thanksgiving with family and friends.
We held a very successful 8th Annual Chili Cook Off & Meat Bingo. The lucky winners of the evening were Mary Johnson in the 50/50 raffle. She won half the pot, which was $164.
Bernice LeGarde won the last game, which was a “cover all” for the complete Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixings including a 20-pound turkey.
This year our own Carol Hackett won the Chili Cook Off. She now is a twotime winner, having won back in 2008. Congratulations to all the winners and a Chi Miigwech to the Reservation Tribal Council and the community for their generous donations and support.
Several Elders traveled to Grand Marais to bid farewell to our longtime neighbor and friend Marge Jamison. Marge had moved into the Care Center a few years ago and now was leaving to be closer to her family. The Elders gifted Marge with a lovely photo album filed with pictures of our many adventures, trips and celebrations together.
Marge also received a wonderful plaque from Trust Lands Environmental Technician Amy Seitz commemorating her contributions as the person establishing Grand Portage’s recycling program. Marge spent many years collecting and breaking down cardboard and aluminum cans at the old store to be recycled. Living off the grid as she did Marge was a champion for the idea of use and use it again. Grand Portage now recycles many things and has a very complete program for waste reduction. Miigwech Marge!
December will be a busy month full of holiday preparations, fundraising and parties. The Elders will be baking Christmas goodies and making soup to sell at the Holiday Craft Sale at the Grand Portage Lodge on Saturday, Dec. 7.
The annual Elder’s Christmas party this year will be Sunday, Dec. 8 at the Lodge from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. We will be travelling to Duluth, Wednesday, Dec. 11 so Elders can do their Christmas shopping. Please call Carol or Patty for transportation, to volunteer and to RSVP for the party.
This year Christmas festivities for the children will be at Headstart on Wednesday, Dec. 18 and with the school children Thursday, Dec. 19. All community members are welcome to come enjoy the children perform and to see Santa. Watch for flyers with times.
The ENP staff, Patty, Carol, Polly, Cedar, Ben, Shirley and Dennis wish everyone a blessed and very Merry Christmas and a New Year filled with good health, prosperity and family!
