The Grand Portage Elders had a very successful 8th Annual Chili Cook Off and Meat Bingo at the Grand Portage Lodge on November 15. The event raised about $1,100. This year’s Chili Cook Off winner was Jeremy “Styx” Carlson.

The 50/50 raffle drawing winner was Mary Waha Deschampe and the bingo grand prizewinner was Marlene Allard. The Meat Bingo grand prize was a complete Thanksgiving meal with all the fixings.

Congratulations to all the winners and a Chi Miigwech to everyone who supported our efforts especially the Grand Portage Reservation Tribal Council, Promotions and the Lodge.

The Elderly Nutrition Program partnered up with AARP to once again offer the Driver’s Refresher Course for those Elders 55 and older who have completed the eight-hour training and were due for their refresher. We had 15 Elders participate with the oldest one 88 years of age. We offer this training in November as the American Legion provides the fee for all vets and their family members.

Completion of this course enables the Elder to receive a 10percent discount on their auto insurance.

December will once again be a very busy month full of holiday activities. We kick off the season by selling soup and Christmas cookies at the Holiday Craft Sale at the Lodge on Dec. 8. Please contact Carol Hackett about your cookie donations.

On Sunday, December 9 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., all Elders 50 years and older are invited to attend the Annual Elder Christmas Party at the Lodge. Come enjoy a tasty buffet, music by Portage and each other’s company.

If you need a ride, give Patty a call at the ENP at (218) 475- 2655. Watch for invitations in the mail.

On December 15, join the Elders for a trip to Duluth for Christmas shopping, with an overnight at Black Bear Casino and the show Brule. We will leave early Saturday morning and return sometime in the afternoon on Sunday. If interested please contact Carol Hackett. Space is limited so first come, first served.

The ENP staff—Patty, Carol, Polly, Cedar, Dennis, Ben, Shirley and our volunteer Diane—wish everyone a very happy Christmas and New Year filled with good health, happiness, family and love!
