The residents at North Shore Care Center welcomed autumn with leaf tour trips up the Gunflint Trail, lunch at The Landing, and a few more days on the patios.

October is upon us with lots of fun themes to enjoy all month—like Oktoberfest, Country Music Month, Columbus Day, Viking High School games, National Pizza Month, and of course Halloween. Fall also brings more baking, craft projects, and movies.

Our annual Oktoberfest weekend will include a history session, movie, baked pretzels, and lots of music. On Saturday, October 20 there will be a brat and sauerkraut lunch, followed by the Lioness Social at 3 p.m. with music and a sing-a-long by Irene Thompson and Nora Bockovich. Later that day there will be a polka dance at 6:30 p.m. featuring accordion music by Jim and Mary Schliep.

Classic country music will be performed by the band Portage on Saturday, October 27 at 6:30 p.m. It will be our Halloween Dance and costumes are encouraged. As always, we invite families, friends, and community members to join in the fun at any of our music events.

Fall crafts are a popular activity at North Shore Care Center. Joyce Kehoe and Belinda Hudler display leaves dipped in paraffin wax, which make great decorations.

Additional music in October will feature Al Fuller & Friends on Tuesday nights, Susan Scherer on Wednesday evenings, and Myron Bursheim on Sunday afternoons.

Birthdays in October will honor Jane Backstrom, Ophelia Bassett, and Ruth Stimmler. Individual birthdays are celebrated with families and staff, as well as the monthly birthday party, which took place on Wednesday, October 3. Cake and ice cream were served along with piano music by Doug Sanders.

Everyone looks forward to filling treat bags again for kids to enjoy on Halloween at the Community Center and at the Care Center. Don’t forget – the residents will give out candy to trick-or-treaters on Halloween night, October 31 from 5 – 7 p.m.

We want to acknowledge the Cook County Community Fund for their generous contribution to the Care Partners of Cook County for an Art Therapy Program for elders. Several residents at the Care Center have benefited from these art sessions.

Many thanks to the dedicated volunteers who have contributed their time and talents at the Care Center during the summer months. You sure know how to make the activities more fun! We wish safe travel to the “Snow Birds” headed south.

There are volunteer opportunities for all ages at the North Shore Care Center. For more information please contact the Activity Department at (218) 387-3518 or visit our website www.nshorehospital.com.
