Residents at the North Shore Care Center have been getting outdoors on the warmer days to enjoy every bit of summer. So far this year the count is 26 days out on the patios, with three picnics, plus six outings in the community! Not as high as the numbers last year, but the gardens are thriving and we get to harvest homegrown veggies soon.

August will be a full month beginning with the Fisherman’s Picnic. It’s always a fun-filled weekend with families and friends in town. Everyone will be treated to fishburgers on Friday night for dinner—thanks to the Lions Club. Several folks will also participate in the parade on Sunday to help promote the new Arrowhead Transit bus in Grand Marais.

Other August outings will take us downtown for lunch at the Senior Center, donuts at the museum, and to a play at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.

There are a lot of birthdays coming up in August. The monthly birthday party will be celebrated on August 14 to honor Phyllis Anderson, Eleanor Matisis, Jack Halverson, Marie Jacobson, and Marigold Linnell. Cake and ice cream will be served at 3 p.m. along with piano music by Doug Sanders.

Additional live music this month will be performed by Myron Bursheim on Sunday afternoons, Al Fuller on Tuesday nights and Susan Scherer on Wednesday nights.

The end of August marks “Hawaiian Week” with something tropical added to our activities each day. And, just in case the weather doesn’t want to cooperate we can still enjoy making fruit kabobs, watching the movie South Pacific, playing Hawaiian Bingo with Walt Mianowski, and the Hawaii 5-0 Dance with the band Portage on Saturday, August 31 at 6:30 p.m. Families and community members are always welcome to join in the fun.

It may be summer, but there have been lots of children’s groups at the Care Center. Students from the Kids Plus program in Grand Marais and the summer science program in Grand Portage have come in several times to visit elders and for Kids & Bingo. Also, our two youth volunteers, Jaymee Dossey and Bianca Zimmer from the Incredible Exchange Program, have been great helpers throughout the summer!

Many thanks to the dedicated volunteers who continue to give their time during the busy summer to be with the residents for Bible study, word scramble, reading, exercise, games, church services, bingo, birthday parties, live music, and dances.
