Care Center celebrates Older Americans Month

May is Older Americans Month and the North Shore Care Center will celebrate with many special activities– especially during National Nursing Home Week, May 10-16.

The month will begin with residents and staff participating in the “Move It in May” program as a team approach to help each other become more active through movement and exercise. We will track our time with the North Shore Hospital and Care Center teams.

May 6 is the annual “Spring Fling Sale” sponsored by the Resident Council. Members have worked for many weeks to prepare craft items, house plants, grab bags, baked goods, and dog biscuits for their in-house sale. White elephant items will also be available.

Every year the long-term healthcare profession pays tribute to residents, employees, and volunteers during Nursing Home Week. Grand Marais Mayor Jay Arrowsmith DeCoux will officially kick off the week with a proclamation to the community on WTIP radio. He will highlight special festivities including Mother’s Day activities, the 50th Anniversary Golden Gala, the monthly birthday party, Gold Dollar Bingo, and a lunch outing to the Senior Center.

The 50th Golden Gala will be held on Monday, May 11 at 6:30 p.m. The semi-formal dance will feature pianist Doug Sanders, followed by the big band sounds of the North Shore Community Band. Guest swing dancers will get residents, families, and guests in the mood for the big night.

Additional entertainment during Older Americans Month will be performed by local musicians Myron Bursheim, Stacy Hawkins, Al Fuller, Tina Kraus, Susan Scherer, and Irene Thompson. The band Portage will play classic country music for a dance on Saturday, May 23 at 6:30 p.m. Families, friends, and community members are always welcome to join our music events.

Some school groups will visit during Older Americans Month to perform a music recital and to help us clean up the gardens and patios on Community Service Day.
