May is Older Americans Month and the North Shore Care Center will celebrate with special activities throughout the month—especially during Homes for the Aging Week, May 11-17, a week that is sponsored by Aging Services of Minnesota.
The month started out with residents and staff participating in the Move It in May program—a team approach to help one another become more active through movement and exercise. We will track our time with the North Shore Hospital and Care Center teams.
May 1 was the annual Spring Fling Sale organized by the Resident Council. Members worked many weeks to prepare knitted items, houseplants, grab bags, and baked goods for the in-house sale. White elephant and new items were also donated to make the sale a big success!
Every year the long-term healthcare profession pays tribute to residents, employees, and volunteers during Homes for the Aging Week with the theme “Stars Among Us.” Grand Marais Mayor Larry Carlson will officially kick off Homes for the Aging Week on May 11 with a proclamation to the community on WTIP radio. He will highlight festivities of the week including a Mother’s Day Social, a Resident Art Show, Senior Prom, Gold Dollar Bingo, and a Pizza Party.
The 8th annual Senior Prom will be held on Wednesday, May 14 at 6:30 p.m. The semi-formal dance will feature pianist Doug Sanders, followed by the big band sounds of the North Shore Community Band. Guest swing dancers will get residents, families, and guests in the mood for the big night.
Additional entertainment during Older Americans Month will be performed by local musicians Myron Bursheim, Al Fuller, Tina Kraus, and Susan Scherer. The band Portage will play classic country music for their monthly dance on Saturday, May 26 at 6:30 p.m. Families, friends, and community members are always welcome to join in the fun!
May outings in the community will be to the Musical Praise and Worship Gathering at Bethlehem Church and for lunch at the Cook County Senior Center. We also look forward to planting our Earth Boxes and more activities on the patios soon! Our first BBQ picnic with families will be on Memorial Day.
There are several school groups visiting us during Older Americans Month to perform a music recital, play Bingo, tour the hospital and care center, and help with projects on Community Service Day.
The annual Volunteer Appreciation Brunch will be Wednesday, May 28 at 10 a.m. The residents and staff want to acknowledge more than 70 volunteers who shared their time and talents with us during 2013. Our volunteers are truly shining stars—enriching the lives of older adults and keeping them connected to the community. Thanks for all that you do!
