May is Older Americans Month and the North Shore Care Center will celebrate with special activities throughout the month—especially during National Nursing Home Week, May 12-18, sponsored by the American Health Care Association and member nursing homes of Aging Services of Minnesota.

The month will start out with residents and staff participating in the “Move It in May” program—a team approach to helping one another get more active through movement and exercise. We will track our time each week with the North Shore Hospital and Care Center team.

On May 1, there will be a Spring Fling Sale, sponsored by the Resident Council. Council members have worked for many weeks knitting items, potting plants, and filling soup jars and grab bags for the sale.

The annual Senior Prom will be held on May 7 at 6:30 p.m. The prom dance will feature pianist Doug Sanders and soloist Mark Abrahamson, followed by the big band sounds of the North Shore Community Band. Guest swing dancers Veronica Weadock and Bob Pranis will be back by popular demand! They know how to get everyone in the mood for the big night.

The monthly birthday party will be celebrated on May 8 for Don Ingram. Cake and ice cream will be served at 3 p.m. along with piano music and a sing-a-long by Sherrie Lindskog and Nora Bockovich.

Another bit of fun will be fishing opener activities with fish stories and games on the patio and a special Mother’s Day Lucky 7 game.

National Nursing Home Week begins on Mother’s Day, May 12. Grand Marais Mayor Larry Carlson will officially kick off the week with a proclamation to the community on WTIP radio. This year the long-term care profession pays tribute to the residents, families, employees, and volunteers with the theme “Stars Among Us.” It honors shining stars—the people who support and care for older adults every day and make a difference in each other’s lives and in our community. Mayor Carlson will highlight special activities that week including Gold Dollar Bingo and two visits from students at School District 166.

Live musical entertainment during Older Americans Month will include Al Fuller, Myron Bursheim, Harris Mills, Susan Scherer, and Irene Thompson. The band Portage will perform their classic country music the last Saturday of the month on May 25 starting at 6:30 p.m.

Everyone is looking forward to more activities on the patio, gardening and eventually our first picnic on Memorial Day. There will also be an outing for shopping downtown and to the Blue Water Café.

The annual Volunteer Appreciation Brunch is May 22 at 10 a.m. The residents and staff want to thank over 80 volunteers for sharing their time and talents during 2012. Our volunteers are shining stars who enrich the lives of residents and keep them connected to their community.
