May is Older Americans Month and the North Shore Care Center will celebrate with special activities throughout the month—especially during Homes for the Aging Week, May 13-19, sponsored by Aging Services of Minnesota.
This year the long-term care profession pays tribute to the residents, families, employees, and volunteers with the theme “Stars Among Us.” It honors shining stars—the people in our midst who support and care for older adults, ultimately making a positive difference in one another’s lives and in our greater community.
The month will start out with residents and staff participating in the “Move It in May” program—a team approach to helping one another get more active through movement and exercise. We will track our time each week with the North Shore Hospital and Care Center team.
On May 9, there will be a Spring Fling Sale, organized by the Resident Council. Members have worked for many weeks knitting items, potting plants, and filling grab bags for the sale.
The monthly birthday party will also be celebrated on May 9 for Marion McKeever and Don Ingram. Cake and ice cream will be served along with piano music by Susan Scherer at 3 p.m. Another bit of fun will be fishing opener activities on May 12 with fish stories, games, and snacks.
Grand Marais Mayor Larry Carlson will officially kick off Homes for the Aging Week with his proclamation to the community on WTIP radio. Everyone is welcome to join the festivities at the Care Center all week, beginning with a Mother’s Day social on May 13 hosted by Mayor Carlson at 3 p.m.
The 6th annual Senior Prom will be held on May 15 at 6:30 p.m. The semi-formal dance will feature pianist Doug Sanders, followed by the big band sounds of North Shore Community Band. Guest swing dancers will get residents, families, and staff in the mood for the big night.
Other fun activities that week are Gold Dollar Bingo on May 17 and a pizza party on May 19.
Additional entertainment during Older Americans Month will continue with music by Al Fuller, Myron Bursheim, and Susan Scherer. The band Portage will perform their classic country music at the Care Center for a dance on May 26 at starting at 6:30 p.m.
May lunch outings in the community will be to Hughie’s Taco House for a Cinco de Mayo meal and to the Harbor Light Supper Club. We also look forward to picnics and activities on the patio sometime soon!
The annual Volunteer Appreciation Brunch is May 25 at 10 a.m. The residents and staff want to thank over 75 volunteers of all ages for sharing their time and talents during 2011. Our volunteers are shining stars that enrich the lives of residents and keep them connected to their community.
