May is “Older Americans Month” and North Shore Care Center will celebrate with special activities each week— especially during National Nursing Home week May 9-15.

The American Health Care Association (AHCA) is the sponsor of National Nursing Home Week. This year the AHCA long-term care profession salutes residents, families, staff, volunteers, and the community-at-large with the theme “Enriching Every Day.” It spotlights the people who support and enrich each other every day—those who make a positive difference in the lives of others—and become enriched themselves.

Grand Marais Mayor Sue Hakes will officially kick off National Nursing Home Week with a proclamation to the community on WTIP radio. Festivities at the Care Center begin on May 9 at 3 p.m. with a Mother’s Day social and music by Sherrie Lindskog. The 4th annual Senior Prom will be held on May 11 at 7 p.m. This semi-formal dance will feature piano classics by Doug Sanders, and the Big Band sounds of North Shore Community Band. Guest swing dancers along with families and staff will help everyone get in the mood for the big night.

Community folks are welcome to join in the fun all week. The monthly birthday party will be May 12 at 3 p.m. with cake, ice cream, and music to honor Marion McKeever, Gerry Eisler, and Grace Eileen Johnson. Gold Dollar Bingo will be on May 13 with Walt Mianowski starting promptly at 2:30 p.m. To wrap up the week, The Sivertones
jazz ensemble will play their lively music on May 14 at 6 p.m.

Other music lined up for May includes Al Fuller, Susan Scherer, Myron Bursheim, Irene Thompson, and Susy Lindskog. The band Portage
will play its country classic music for a dance on May 22 at 6:30 p.m.

Residents welcome the warmer weather for lunch outings to Hughie’s Taco House on Cinco de Mayo Day and to the Senior Center. The Cook County Middle School Student Council will treat residents to pizza at Sven & Ole’s, too. Thanks, kids!

TheVolunteer Appreciation Brunch is planned for May 26 at 10 a.m. The residents and staff wish to thank over 70 volunteers of all ages who share their time and talents throughout the year. Volunteers truly enrich the lives of residents and keep them connected to this great community.
