As we move into the holiday season the Elders continue to stay very busy. Sixteen people completed the Driver’s Refresher Course. Four of the 16 were participating in the 8-hour beginner class. Completion of this class enables the Elders to receive a 10% discount on their auto insurance. A Chi Miigwech goes out to the veteran’s program as it paid the class fee for all veterans and their family members.
The Elders provided over 30 cakes this year for the Halloween carnival and the cakewalk. We had a great time decorating them, and thank you to Polly James for baking most of the cakes and cupcakes. The cakewalk is a big hit with the children and their families.
The Elders were able to attend the movie premiere of the Grand Portage story as told by the Park Service. A wonderful time was had by all who attended. Miigwech to Bill and Carol Hackett for spending their wedding anniversary driving and chaperoning the Elders for this event.
By now everyone who is eligible should have reviewed their Medicare Part D and selected a plan for 2012. Questions or concerns, please call Patty at 475- 2655 or Cindy at the clinic at 475-3009. You can also call the Senior Linkage Line at 1-800- 333-2433.
The Elders had a very successful 6th Annual Chili Cook Off and Meat Bingo. They made about $1,500 that will be used for their annual Christmas shopping and Bentleyville trip to Duluth. Howard Johnson won the chili cook off. He won $10, a beautiful chili pot trophy, his name on the trophy plaque and bragging rights for a year.
Eddie Hertzberg won the 50/50 raffle for $135, and the other big winner of the night was Kyler Deschampe, who won a couple of bingos and the last game for the whole Thanksgiving dinner. Congratulations to everyone and a Chi Miigwech to the RTC and community for supporting us.
We will be selling Christmas cookies again this year at the Holiday Craft Sale at the Grand Portage Lodge on December 10 and our annual Christmas party will be Sunday, December 18 at the Lodge from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Please watch for flyers announcing these events; signup sheets will be at the ENP. Carol Hackett will be contacting Elders for cookie donations for the craft sale. Anyone needing rides for these events please call the ENP.
Many Elders were able to participate in cooking classes offered through the FDA and Snap programs. We have had classes on pickling, bread and salsa making and just in time for Thanksgiving, pumpkin pie-making. Jaye Clearwater, with help from the ENP staff and Elders, organized and taught these wonderful classes. Everyone who participated went home with a finished product and sometimes even the necessary utensils for cooking the food. Many families and young people participated. So much fun and knowledge were had that these types of cooking classes will continue throughout the year.
Currently we are running a reading with the kids program and always need Elders to listen to the children read. Anyone interested in volunteering, please call Patty or Carol at 475-2655.
The ENP staff would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and healthy and happy New Year! Be safe and God bless!
