Busy and successful Rendezvous for Elders

The Elders had a very successful Rendezvous Days. The renovated fish shack worked great. It was much more spacious and more efficient. All of the building modifications, new equipment, signage and new food product made this a profitable weekend.

A Chi Miigwech to all our volunteers in the fish shack, bingo hall and raffle table and to the many people who came out and supported us.

This year’s raffle winners were: Bill Hackett, who won the handmade Eagle quilt; Rick Alvar, who collected the 32-inch flat screen TV; Rita Hanle received the $50 Holiday gift card; and Tyler Bolen won the 50/50 raffle that was $379.50. Congratulations to all of you!

Many of the ENP volunteers enjoyed the annual BBQ and potluck held after the weekend. This year we were rained out, so it took place in the ENP. This was a little more intimate, and people stayed longer to chat. Bill Hackett and his daughter and sonin law grilled the steaks and chicken. Many delicious dishes were brought to share. There are Great Cooks in Grand Portage! This is a real good time for all the ENP volunteers to rest, relax and enjoy each other’s company. The Elder Advisory Board will be providing a detailed financial report at the next regular meeting.

One of the more popular places at the Grand Portage Pow Wow and Rendezvous Days was the food stands. Here are people lined up for fish nuggets at the new Elder stand.

We are looking forward to a visit with Marjori Bottila for Medicare enrollmentand an evening presentation on Medicare/Health Insurance and
Long – Term Care Options, Monday, August 28th at the ENP. Appointment times are full, so there will be another enrollment opportunity in September. Please watch for flyers. Tuesday, Aug. 29 there is a “Rez Ride” scheduled. We will be checking out the community garden in Mineral

Center and a local community member’s flower
garden in the village. Pie and coffee at the lodge to follow. These outings are looked forward to and keep us informed about activities in our community.

The Wisdom Steps program is sponsoring a team for this year’s Alzheimer’s Walk to fight this disease in Duluth on September 9. Several Elders are out contacting sponsors for pledges. All funding will go towards research to end this disease that is affecting each and every community.
