August activities at the Care Center

August is here with Fisherman’s Picnic weekend upon us! Everyone looks forward to having families and friends back in town for the festivities. It has been a fun-filled summer for elders at the North Shore Care Center, thanks to our beautiful sunny weather.

The residents hope the sun continues to shine all weekend so they can try their luck at the bingo tent at the American Legion on Friday. The Grand Marais Lions Club will provide their tasty fishburgers for dinner that night, which is always a treat–and always appreciated.

Some employees and residents will be participating in the parade on Sunday. Watch for us on the Arrowhead Transit bus, as we will be making lots of noise celebrating 50 years of the Care Center. Other outings in the community during August will include lunch at the Senior Center and a visit to the Cook County Historical Society Museum.

A monthly birthday party will take place on Wednesday, August 12 to honor Marie Jacobson, Marigold Linnell, and Ione Jones. Cake and ice cream will be served at 3 p.m. along with classic piano favorites by Doug Sanders.

Enjoying summer! An outing to the Johnson Heritage Post for the Fiber Arts Show was enjoyed by a number of residents in July. Participants also received ice cream treats from the Dairy Queen while waiting for the bus.

Additional music lined up for August will feature several local musicians. There will be weekly performances by Myron Bursheim, Stacy Hawkins, Kate Kelmberger, Al Fuller, and Susan Scherer.

The classic country band Portage will perform for a dance at the Care Center the last Saturday of the month on August 29 at 6:30 p.m. Families, friends, and community folks are welcome to join in the fun at our music events.

The end of August is “Hawaiian Week” at the Care Center with a tropical theme added to the daily activities. The residents will watch the movie Blue Hawaii, make tropical drinks and fruit kabobs, play Hawaiian Bingo, wear flowered shirts and leis for the Portage dance, and do the Limbo–of course!

The residents want to acknowledge all the dedicated volunteers who continue to share their talent and their time during these busy summer months. There are volunteer opportunities for all ages at the North Shore Care Center.
