An abundance of activities at the Care Center in November





Halloween fun at the North Shore Care Center! The North Shore Preschool children performed at the North Shore Care Center on Halloween. They stopped to have a snack before they paraded through the halls to visit other departments to receive plenty of treats. Mrs. “H.” (Cheryl Hovde) has been bringing her preschool kids to the Care Center, hospital, and clinic on Halloween for 20 years.

Mrs. “H.” (Cheryl Hovde) has been bringing her preschool kids to the Care Center, hospital, and clinic on Halloween for 20 years.

There will be an abundance of activities at the North Shore Care Center during November. As the days get shorter there will be more time indoors to enjoy craft projects and some holiday baking.

The residents will mark Minnesota’s deer hunting season opener by cooking venison stew. On Veterans Day there will be an outing to American Legion Post 413 for a special roast beef dinner, plus music by the band Portage. The veterans to be honored at the Care Center are Byron Whaley, Don Ingram, Jack Halverson, and David Clutter.

Other outings this month will include lunch at the Senior Center, and a holiday shopping trip.

Hometown musician and songwriter Tim Styles will be in Grand Marais after much success in Nashville and other parts of the country. Tim will be performing in concert at the Care Center on Thursday, November 10 at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to come and listen to Tim’s latest unique music.

There will be additional music during November by musicians Al Fuller, Myron Bursheim, Susan Scherer, and Harris Mills.

Three birthdays will be celebrated in November for Dorothe Vaughn, Fanny Sylvester, and Bertha Toftey. There are individual birthdays with family, as well as the monthly party on Wednesday, November 9. Cake and ice cream will be served at 3 p.m. with piano music by Susy Lindskog.

The Lioness Club will make delicious pumpkin desserts to serve at their monthly social on Saturday, November 19. Irene Thompson will perform her old time favorites on the piano starting at 3 p.m.

Turkey Bingo is back with Walt Mianowski on Thursday, November 17 at 2:30 p.m. The lucky winner will be announced in the News-Herald on Thanksgiving weekend.

Thanksgiving Day brings in many families for a traditional turkey dinner served at 11:30 a.m. There will be an old-fashioned square dance on Saturday, November 26 at 6:15 p.m. with The Arrowtippers dance group. This will be our 4th annual square dance and we welcome community members to join in the fun. Get ready to do the Virginia Reel with wheelchairs!

Many residents have been working with Activity Deptartment staff for an in-house holiday sale sponsored by the Resident Council. On Wednesday, November 30 the “Beat the Rush” Holiday Sale will begin at 10 a.m. Items at the sale will include handmade knitted hats and ornaments, baked goods, house plants, white elephant items, grab bags, free popcorn, and chances on prizes. All proceeds will go to the Resident Council fund.

During this season of giving thanks, the residents at North Shore Care Center wish to express their gratitude to the staff and community volunteers for all that they do throughout the year.
