Walking the Old Road: A People’s History of Chippewa City and the Grand Marais Anishinaabe

Walking the Old Road is a beautiful book. From the first paragraph to the last paragraph, it is a compelling, excellent read, its pages filled with poignant pictures, its text loaded with interesting facts and information that author Staci Lola Drouillard said, “took 30 years to learn.” Chippewa City, or what is left of it, is situated one mile east […]

Pavelich found to be mentally ill, civilly committed

After weighing testimony from two court-appointed psychologists, Sixth Judicial Judge Michael Cuzzo found 1980 U.S. Olympic “Miracle on Ice” hockey star Mark Pavelich to be “mentally ill and dangerous” and ordered him into civil commitment at a secure state facility. Cuzzo’s ruling came on December 4. On August 28, Pavelich, 61, was arrested at his Lutsen home for allegedly assaulting […]

Recycle center to add a full-time position

Tim Nelson, county planning director, came before the Cook County board of commissioners on November 26 with a request to add a full-time recycling assistant position to the current staff. Nelson cited the explosion in the growth of recyclable materials handled by the center as the main reason to add another employee. He also provided a brief history of the […]

Noted outdoor photographer David Johnson took this picture of a sleepy lynx recently on a warm sunny winter day. Note the tufted ears on this beautiful cat. Lynx have large padded paws that are great for walking in the snow and long whiskers on their face. Lynx are good swimmers and good climbers. Their favorite food is snowshoe hare.

County commissioner compensation continued …

Last week’s column compared Cook County commissioner compensation with six other counties included in the Iron Range Fiscal Disparities program (excluding St. Louis). Population has been and will continue to be somewhat affected by disease, famine, warfare and economic pressures, but these have not slowed population growth by any substantial degree. Certainly “green” practices are worthwhile efforts to help […]

Fact or fiction?

Imagine someone writing a story about a person born into riches, inheriting a fortune and using his rich background to better himself beyond anybody’s belief. Using deceit, lies and cunning, he builds himself an empire filled with palaces, royal parks where one chases a little white ball, and heaven reaching towers rivaling the famous (or infamous) Tower of Babel. They […]

What’s wrong with a woman’s right to know?

If I understand David Little’s letter, he is correct that there are no laws for men, such as, A Man’s Right to Know, which ensures informed consent prior to any medical procedure. Or, a physician-only requirement for men, which requires that only doctors perform surgery, and while the physician can perform outpatient surgery in his office, he must have admitting […]
