A happy July 4 for Franken

It seems fitting somehow that the eight-month controversy surrounding the Minnesota senatorial race ended so near the 4th of July, Independence Day. I am proud of our country and its citizens and the way we handle elections and recounts, whether presidential or for a senate seat. There may be people who disagree with the outcome of an election, but they... READ MORE >

CORRECTIONS:

The actual date is Tuesday, July 7 at 3:30 p.m. in the tourist park recreation hall. The News-Herald apologizes for the error. » T he June 27, 2009 article entitled... READ MORE >

Cut of different cloth

We write these columns to persuade people to convert. You knew that, right? We write of different worldviews, different values, of God and of his Son, Jesus, each from our own perspective, but each with either an implied or explicitly stated invitation to change your thinking and your life, to accept God’s offer of mercy, forgiveness, and new life. If I asked you five questions about your childhood, I bet a dollar you could answer at least four right off the top of your head. What was the name of your childhood dog? (Tiny) What street did you live on? (Cramer Road) Who was your very best friend in kindergarten? (Colleen Lamb) What was the color of the carpet... READ MORE >

Public transportation for seniors—and others

There is public transportation in Cook County. No, it is not new. Arrowhead Transit, a division of Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency, has operated bus service in the county since 1974. The buses operate out of the Senior Center, but everyone— adults, children, visitors, senior citizens—is welcome to ride Arrowhead Transit buses. All of the buses are equipped with lifts for... Fishin’ Traditions

The fishing has been a roller coaster ride, much like the weather patterns of the past week. The bigger walleyes have moved out to the rock piles, but they are scattered. On windy days the bite is pretty good in the muddy bays, but the fish are definitely staging in spots closer to the big lake now. I love the... READ MORE >

Use decibel meter for enforcement

I have been following the Grand Marais City Councils’ convolutions on the noise ordinance as the Cook County News-Herald has been reporting it. I think Rhonda Silence’s June 27 column is right on. Without a nonsubjective measurement allowance such as a decibel level at a specified distance from the noise or music source, the city will have no legally enforceable... READ MORE >
