Lumber Camp is a one-of-a-kind event
Rhonda Silence | August 13, 2011
There was non-stop activity at the Fisherman’s Picnic Lumber Camp presented by Wood-Mizer and Central Boiler—friendly contests, demonstrations, and there was even some work being done as Lumber Camp organizer Niel Atkinson milled three cords of salvage logs donated by Hedstrom Lumber Company. The logs, trucked to Lumber Camp by Circle H Timber, were milled with the LT40 Wood-Mizer portable... READ MORE >

Canadian fires affecting air quality
Rhonda Silence | August 06, 2011
Although there are no wildfires burning in Cook County, the smell of smoke and reduced air quality continue because of fires burning in Ontario, Canada and in the Kawishiwi District of Superior National Forest. The fire in the Kawishiwi District was detected on July 15 on the southeast corner of Kekebaic Lake, north of the portage into Strup Lake. The... READ MORE >

Budget battles hurt us all
Rhonda Silence | August 06, 2011
I didn’t write about the state government shutdown when we were in the midst of the mess. It was just too irritating. I made several trips to the east and west ends of the county during the shutdown, passing the bright orange temporary fencing and traffic cones blocking the entrance to our state parks. How much did the state spend... READ MORE >

Quetico-Superior claims 2011 Dragon Boat Festival championship
Rhonda Silence | August 06, 2011
A little rain didn’t deter the dozens of Dragon Boat paddlers in the Grand Marais harbor on Saturday, July 30. The paddlers and the crowd along the shore dived under cover during a rain delay of about an hour between race heats but the skies cleared and the racing continued throughout the afternoon. At the end of the day, the... READ MORE >

Grand Marais Coast Guard tows stranded sailboat
Rhonda Silence | August 06, 2011
When people monitoring VHF-FM marine radio channels hear a pan-pan message from the U.S. Coast Guard, they immediately pause to listen carefully. A pan-pan [pronounced ponpon] is the Coast Guard term used to signify an urgent communication—someone nearby could be in trouble. Such was the case at approximately 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 30. As the North Shore Dragon Boat... READ MORE >

Anyone driving through “downtown” Hovland in the last three years has likely seen the activity at the former Flute Reed store and bar and has perhaps wondered what the new owners of the building—Archie and Natasha Kirk—were doing. Inquisitive folks can now stop by to satisfy their curiosity. The building renovations are mostly complete and Natasha is open for business... READ MORE >

That is the mission of the Lighthouse Center for Vision Loss and to fulfill that mission the center is coming to Grand Marais to offer a two-part series called Living Well with Vision Loss. Lots of smiles at Gunflint Canoe Races
Rhonda Silence | July 30, 2011
Although an approaching storm meant no gunnel racing at the Wednesday, July 20 Gunflint-Seagull-Sag Canoe Races, the races that did take place were enjoyed by all. As were all the lakeside activities. There was delicious food of course, including the famous Gunflint Trail sloppy joes and fixings. And again this year there were eating contests, with a twist. In addition... READ MORE >

Watching the birds
Rhonda Silence | July 30, 2011
I laughed when I looked back at the Unorganized Territory that I wrote for last year’s Fisherman’s Picnic. Last year at this time I wrote about the ubiquitous seagull and how it is a symbol—albeit a sometimes-annoying symbol—of the North Shore. Little did I know that this Fisherman’s Picnic, the City of Grand Marais would be facing a seagull—and pigeon—problem.... READ MORE >
