Fall pocket money
Rhonda Silence starnews@boreal.org | October 02, 2010
I’ve been hearing a bit of whining lately from friends who will miss the hot and muggy weather we had this summer. I’m not with them. I love the fact that fall has arrived in full force. I don’t really have a favorite season. I can find something I like about each of the four seasons. Winter I love because... READ MORE >
Finding kindness

There is a very nice letter to the editor this week about a search for a missing Bible. Although the Bible was eventually found, the letter writer expressed appreciation to Jeff Sylvester of the Recycle Center, who went above and beyond in the search. I’m not surprised. I’ve known Jeff since we were both kids in junior high. He was... READ MORE >
Forever may it wave

I agree with the “coffee klatch crew” that wants to erect a flagpole in downtown Grand Marais in memory of Dick Joynes. I think that would be a wonderful way to remember a man who was a friend to so many. The recent discussion of where a memorial flag could be placed in downtown Grand Marais has me thinking of... A meaningful memorial

Every few years, the publication date of the newspaper falls on September 11, as it does this year. Seeing September 11 printed on the dateline always brings back memories of the desperate day nine years ago when the nation watched in horror as planes crashed into solid walls of glass and steel and killed thousands of our fellow Americans. I... READ MORE >
Back-to-school rewards

Every year as the temperatures start to drop and the earthy scent of fall is in the air, I can close my eyes and clearly see myself as an elementary student anxiously waiting for the school bus. The memories of waiting for the bus, listening to a white-throated swallow singing overhead, holding my new notebooks and pencils are so vivid... READ MORE >
Comment period déjà vu
Rhonda Silence starnews@boreal.org | August 28, 2010
I had a feeling of déjà vu last week as I read through the environmental impact statement (EIS) for the U.S. Forest Service South Fowl Snowmobile Access project. It seemed as though I had read and heard all of this before. ThenI realized—I had! I did a quick computer search and sure enough, in 2009, I wrote an article for... READ MORE >
Lucky 13

Did you get through Friday the 13th unscathed? I hope so. I hope you are not a paraskevidekatriaphobic. Instead, I hope that, like me, you didn’t even realize that it was the supposed day of bad luck until it was long past. Friday wasn’t a bad day at all. I had my bad luck day on Thursday the 12th when... READ MORE >
Seagull silliness
Rhonda Silence starnews@boreal.org | August 14, 2010
Watching the seagulls hover over the final event of Fisherman’s Picnic— the fish toss on Sunday afternoon, just before the drawing for the grand prize of $10,000—I was reminded of how omnipresent seagulls are in our North Shore life. They are always around when there is food, of course, and they are probably quite puzzled during Fisherman’s Picnic by the... READ MORE >
Sleeping through the primary

We’ve had some exceptionally busy weeks at the Cook County News-Herald. We are always busy. Some businesses slow down at some point during the year, but in the newspaper business, there isn’t a “shoulder season.” Just because there are fewer cars on the road or shoppers in the stores, there isn’t a slow down in the news. In fact, during... READ MORE >
Grateful for festivals
Rhonda Silence starnews@boreal.org | July 31, 2010
Although this issue of the Cook County News-Herald contains the schedule and information about the upcoming Fisherman’s Picnic, as I write this column we are on the eve of the North Shore Dragon Boat Festival in Grand Marais. If I appear a little confused at times, it’s because I’m always running a little bit ahead of myself. Despite being in... READ MORE >
